Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that I was notified today (February 11, 2012) by the Model T Ford Club of America that we have re-qualified as a chapter with the rights and privileges thereof. We have also qualified for Chapter Liability Insurance for the year 2012.

Nearly 75% of our members are also members of the MTFCA. Shall we work at achieving 100% participation in the national?

Mad River T members, guests and others enjoyed a beautiful Saturday roaming the rolling hills and back roads of west central Ohio and east central Indiana, stopping at the Model T Museum for a tour and lunch. The tour planned by intrepid Ters Hank Steinmetz and Bruce Klepinger began and departed from Hank's country estate via a well-planned 68 mile roundtrip. The return leg included an optional hill climb to test the mettle of both drivers and vehicles.

The Miriam Tree

It stands guard on the curve of the lane, the Miriam Tree. It is quite tall, almost striking in its size and solitude. I visited it this Labor Day weekend, the Miriam Tree, as I have the past several Labor Day weekends. My first visit was at Miriam’s insistence, and at my desire to gaze at the Miriam Tree.

The Miriam Tree keeps its vigil behind the modest home on South Taylor Street, a home now for sale, as it must be, because its owner has slipped from our view to that of her Lord. Nearby, at the home’s rear, is the overripe arbor, burdened as is the tree with a multitude of fruit. The flowers of summer are waning, as those of fall come to bloom. A single sign in front alerts us that the home will soon enough have a new owner.

Likely, the hundreds of pieces of memorabilia inside the home that reflected her love of a hobby, and a grand stewardship of a labor of love, are now safely stored away, or proudly displayed in new venues. Those pieces also reflected a love for Miriam, sent to her, as they were, by grateful colleagues and recipients of her careful and loving stewardship of an annual tour, and founding of a club to sponsor the tour.

It was this passion of hers that brought me to her, to her home and to the Miriam Tree. “Please, take all you want,” insisted Miriam, “Nobody else seems to want them.” It was a yearly plea, one that I gladly fulfilled. And so, each year, for the past several, I’ve done as Miriam wanted, and taken as many of the delicious pears as I’ve thought I could use, or make available to others.

I see the Miriam Tree each Labor Day weekend, but pick the fruit later, in fall. Labor Day is when the coming bounty is gauged, and I am always there for the West Liberty Labor Day Festival, a gem of Ohio festivals, and as unique and unforgettable as Miriam.

Others may find our dear friend remembered for her love and support of her church. Still others, for her love of the Model T hobby. Certainly, most will always remember her unflagging and sacrificial service to her family, and to her friends. I shall always remember Miriam as being represented, as she is still, by the Miriam Tree. Like Miriam, it stands erect, it gives freely of its many fruits and it never disappoints those that come to it. It is, after all, the Miriam Tree.
